What does a midwife actually do?

If you’ve ever wondered what a midwife really does—you’re not alone.

For many people, the word “midwife” brings up images of home births or historical dramas, but the truth is: modern midwives offer skilled, holistic, deeply personalized care for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

And if you’re planning a home birth (or even just exploring your options), a midwife might be exactly what you’re looking for.

🩺 Clinical Care for Healthy Pregnancies

As a traditional midwife based in Franklin County, PA, I provide full prenatal, birth, and postpartum care for people experiencing healthy, low-risk pregnancies. That includes:

  • Comprehensive prenatal visits
  • Physical assessments (belly measurements, blood pressure, labs, etc.)
  • Monitoring baby’s growth and well-being
  • Monitoring your emotional and mental well-being
  • Birth attendance in the comfort of your home
  • Postpartum care for both you and baby

I carry all the essential supplies needed to safely support a home birth—and I’m trained to recognize when a hospital transfer is needed. It is not home birth at all cost. It is safe birth, first and foremost.

🧠 Education and Informed Choice

One of the biggest differences between midwifery care and standard care is time—I take time to explain what’s happening in your body, what your options are, and how to make informed choices that feel right for you.

You’re not a patient. You’re a partner in your care.

💛 Emotional and Whole-Person Support

Pregnancy and birth aren’t just physical events—they’re emotional, mental, and deeply personal.

In midwifery care, we talk about more than your blood pressure. We talk about how you’re feeling. What you’re excited about. What you’re nervous about. How your relationships are shifting. How to prepare for the postpartum season, not just the birth itself.

This is care that honors the whole you.

🏠 Why Home Birth?

Home birth is a safe, evidence-based option for people with healthy pregnancies who want to birth in a familiar, private, supported space.

With a midwife, you receive one-on-one, attentive care that respects your pace, your preferences, and your power.

And yes—there’s still charting, equipment, protocols, and safety plans (we just bring them to you instead of the other way around).

👶 What About After Baby Comes?

Midwifery care continues after the birth. I visit you at home during those early postpartum days to check on you and your baby—physically and emotionally.

We make sure feeding is going well, bleeding is normal, baby is thriving, and you feel supported as you adjust to your new rhythm.

✨ In a Nutshell?

A midwife is your medical provider, your educator, your emotional anchor, and your birth team leader—rolled into one.

And for many people, it’s the kind of care they didn’t know they needed… until they experienced it.

If you’re curious about home birth or midwifery care, I’d love to talk with you. No pressure, no rush—just real conversation and real support.
